Disconnect From the Digital World

The society that we live in today is one heavily controlled by technology and digital devices. While technological advances definitely have their advantages and our easy reach to the outside world can make us feel more connected, there are a few downsides as well. Being constantly connected to non-stop information and social media updates can dangerously lead to feeling overstimulated, envious, lonely, and unable to live in the moment. Our brain and our mental state need a break once in a while, and we all need time to unplug and connect with ourselves, and just as importantly, connect with our natural surroundings. One of the best ways to achieve that is to immerse oneself in the wild, face to face with nature, wildlife, and nothing else. A luxurious African safari is the perfect solution to disconnecting from the digital world, and below are the reasons why.

1. An African safari offers world-class wildlife sightings

Countries in Africa such as Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, are known for their abundance of wildlife in their natural habitat, including the Big 5 (elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalos), and many others. Being surrounded by all kinds of fauna and flora, and being immersed in the African bush really helps you to disconnect from technology and makes you feel closer to nature, giving you the opportunity to see the world as bigger than yourself.

2. There is a range of safari types to choose from

If driving around in National Parks in an open 4×4 safari vehicle is not your thing, go on an aquatic safari trip on a traditional canoe in the Okavango Delta in Botswana or glide along the Zambezi River in Zambia. The tranquil ride will leave you feeling peaceful and relaxed, while offering opportunities to spot hippos wallowing in the water, or crocodiles catching some sun rays. The boat cruises are even better at sunrise where you get to see the world come alive, or at sunset where you get to witness the changing colours of the skies as nocturnal animals start to surface. It is one of the best experiences of the African wild, and a great way to connect with nature.

3. Safari accommodation

The accommodation of your safari lodge itself can be an excellent way to unplug and disconnect with the outside world. While most lodges and tents offer electricity and wifi service, there are many that emphasize a true authentic African experience in the bush, giving you the chance to put your digital life aside and enjoy the present. Rest assured that you will not be bored at your accommodation without wifi or electricity – many are situated right along a riverbed or overlook a waterhole, where you can observe animals gathering for a drink from the common lounge, your private terrace, or the pool. Some camps and lodges even offer cooking classes and cultural trips to local villages.

4. Cultural exploration

On an African safari, be it with the Masai Mara in Kenya and Tanzania, the San people of Botswana, or the Ju/’hoan people of Namibia, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and engage with local tribes, gaining insight into the life of hunter-gatherers and bushmen. These interactions help both the local communities and the visitors. They also offer a different perspective and broaden cultural knowledge, with the opportunity to practice tolerance, respect, and gratitude, not to mention a good way to connect with different people in real life, away from smartphones and the internet.

5. Wild nature, scenery, and conservation

The beautiful scenery of the African bush, the wild and untamed natural landscape, even without wildlife sightings, is enough to make one want to unplug and be in the moment. Whether it’s touring the Victoria Falls and listening to the thundering water, or exploring the wild with an experienced guide, tracking endangered rhinos on foot, or watching the sunset from your plunge pool at the lodge, a few days in the wild will leave you feeling rejuvenated and connected with nature. It’s also a good opportunity to learn about endangered species and conservation efforts, and making us realise that there is an important world existing outside of our social media lives.

Zanzibar Travel Advice

A tropical paradise in East Africa, Zanzibar is an archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. Famous for the cultural traditions, cuisine, and gorgeous beaches and lagoons, it is not surprising that Zanzibar Holiday Packages are so popular and are the preferred option to visit and explore Zanzibar. However, while most trips to Zanzibar occur without any incidents, it is always important to be aware of travel advice and notices before your trip.

Personal safety measures and dress code

  1. Being a predominantly Muslim society, Zanzibar can be conservative in some ways. Visitors are advised to respect the local customs and traditions, and dress modestly when not at the beach, particularly when in town. It is recommended to wear light, knee-length, loose-fitting clothing and cover the shoulders.
  2. While regular beach wear is allowed on the beach, there are no nude or topless beaches in Zanzibar.
  3. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and expensive jewellery, and carry a copy of your passport and leave the original in the hotel safe.
  4. Don’t accept lifts from unlicensed taxis.
  5. Avoid walking alone especially in isolated areas and after dark.

Health

  1. Get a yellow fever vaccination no less than 10 days before your trip. Keep the certificate as you might need it for visa and entry purposes.
  2. Take the necessary precautions against malaria (anti-malaria medication, bug spray, mosquito nets).
  3. Zanzibar lies along the equator, and the sun is very strong. Wear sunscreen and hats, and avoid long exposure in the sun.
  4. Wash your hands regularly in case of cholera outbreaks.
  5. Do not drink the tap water.

Traveling around

  1. The high-speed ferry is a cheaper alternative to taking a Cessna flight from Dar Es Salaam. In general, those boats are safe, comfortable, and modern, although in general it is recommended to not board if it looks overloaded. If you’re prone to seasickness, stay on the top deck for fresh air and nice views.
  2. Many visitors use taxis to get around, but they can be costly if used regularly. It is better to pre-book a taxi at the airport for better prices. Most locals use a mini bus called dala-dala, which is relatively safe but can get crammed with people, fish, and some farm animals.
  3. It is recommended to rent a car to explore the island. Choose a reputable rental car company, and be aware that most cars are older than 15 years old, despite their low mileage. You will have to obtain a local driver’s permit, which the car hire company can provide if you bring a valid driver’s license. Rental cars are usually automatic, with the steering wheel on the right hand side of the vehicle, as they drive on the left side of the road. Drive very carefully at night as visibility is reduced, due to lack of street lights. There are regular traffic police checks, so make sure to always have your relevant documents handy. Always ask for an official ticket and the police officer’s information if they fine you.

General travel tips

  1. Avoid the months of March, April and May as they are prone to long and heavy rainfalls
  2. During the fasting month of Ramadan, many restaurants and amenities will be closed, but resorts stay open. Openly consuming drinks, food, and cigarettes outside of the resorts is frowned upon.
  3. Life in Zanzibar is slow, and things such as your meal order can take a while.
  4. Avoid sitting under coconut trees as coconuts tend to fall without notice.
  5. Street-food markets are packed with locals and tourists, and generally serve delicious food. Enquire about the food prior to eating it, in case it’s been sitting out all day in the sun. Do not eat from street markets if there is a cholera outbreak.
  6. Understand Zanzibar time to avoid miscommunications: Zanzibaris start counting time as from sunrise, not from midnight.

Booking on a winter cruise beach break could be just the type of holiday you need to top up those all-important vitamin-D levels. Here are some of the top beaches to visit on your winter holiday:

Amadorous Beach – Gran Canaria

A must for anyone heading on a winter cruise to the Canary Islands, Gran Canarias’s Amadorous Beach is an incredible man-made beach with tons to do for families and couples alike. With balmy temperatures, all year round and guaranteed sunshine, it’s the perfect winter sun beach.

Playa Del Este – Cuba

The classic white sands, crystal clear waters and towering palm trees are a Cuban highlight and a must visit for anyone going on a Caribbean cruise this winter. Just 18km South of Havana, it’s easy to access the beach by hopping on a bus and takes around 20 minutes to get there. Once you’re there you’ll find amazing sports facilities and café bars to grab a drink and a bite to eat.

Reduit Beach – St Lucia

The most popular beach on St Lucia, Reduit is one of the prettiest and lively beaches in the Caribbean. There’s a range of water sports to get involved in, a gorgeous beach bar when you can enjoy fresh grilled fish and exotic cocktails and a mixture of lively spots and more deserted sections depending on your preference.

Las Cucharas Beach- Lanzarote

Located on the east side of the canary Island, Costa Teguise is home to Cucharas Beach, and a popular windsurfing spot thanks to its breezy reputation. Not to be put off, the breeze is welcoming in the hot winter sun Lanzarote gets and provides a comfortable temperature for sunbathing.
