Tips on What to do During Your Time in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of the coolest European cities to visit and it makes for the perfect long break for people within Europe, and a great stopping off point for those who are visiting. Amsterdam is a perfect hub airport with flights coming in and out from all over the world. To get the best prices on your flights to Amsterdam be sure to check out this site where you can find the lowest rates and the hottest deals.

Amsterdam is famed for being the home of tulips, open-mindedness and rich artistic history and there is so much for tourists to explore in this European capital. If you are visiting Europe then I would urge you to make Amsterdam one of your stopping off points, and I would equally recommend that for people in Europe, that they consider Amsterdam as a city for a long weekend. When you get to the ‘Dam, here are some of the awesome experiences which you can have.

Wander The Red Light District

Prostitution has been legal in Amsterdam for many years and its famed Red Light District is where sex workers ply their trade under heavily regulated circumstances. This area of Amsterdam isn’t just about prostitution however and there is a lot to enjoy from museums to trendy bars, not to mention of course the cafes where people can indulge in another legal substance in the city.

Heineken Museum

Amsterdam is where the globally famous beer Heineken is made and you can take a tour of the factory and gain a fascinating insight into both the history of the beer and the company, and how the product is made. Expect to spend around 2 hours in this museum, and you can also expect a nice cold glass of Heineken at the end of the journey.

Anne Frank’s House

Anne Frank and her diaries document a young girl who was in fear of her life, hiding from the Nazis during the holocaust. During her time on the run she made a home in Amsterdam and it was then turned into a museum. The house is a hidden apartment which features artifacts from both Frank’s time in the city, as well as a deeper look at the persecution of the jews during that time.

Take a Bike Out

Amsterdam is famed for the number of bicycles here and it is a city which has aimed to shun car travel in favor of the bicycle and a tram network. Because of this it is a city which is super bike-friendly and there are hundreds of routes which you can take around the city. If you fancy getting out of the city then you’ll also find some routes which will take you to nearby towns and the outer regions of Amsterdam. The city is very flat so you can expect an easy ride when you rent a bike for the day.

Take a Canal Cruise

The canal belt in Amsterdam is not easy to miss and just about everywhere you go in the city you’ll pass a bridge or a lock which gives way to the vein-like canals which cut through the city. For the perfect day out why not take a canal cruise which will give you a  guided tour of this amazing city? You can choose evening tours which include a candle-lit meal, alternatively you can head out during the day and watch the city as it goes about its day.

Hit The Van Gogh Museum

This museum has the largest collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world and it attracts art lovers from every corner of the planet. Here you’ll find collections of the painter’s work from every period which he went through, and even if you are not a big fan of art there will be something here to amaze and impress you. You could spend anywhere from 3 hours to 8 hours in this vast museum and it is really worthwhile, if nothing more than to lay your eyes on a piece of work by one of the greatest artists of all time.

You will absolutely love Amsterdam and this list above is a very small portion of the huge list of things which you can enjoy during your time in the Dutch capital.

5 Unforgettable Trips You Must Take

One of the best ways to broaden the mind is by travelling the world. With so many fantastic destinations you can visit, it can often be difficult to discover the best place to book on your next adventure across our beautiful planet; however, you can’t go too wrong with the following cities…

Amsterdam_052006

Amsterdam, Netherlands

There is so much to see and do in Amsterdam that you would struggle to fit it all into one trip. The city offers the perfect blend of historic heritage with modern living, as you won’t know where to look in the Red Light District, whilst you won’t be able to take your eyes off the old merchant houses that offer unique tilts.

Be sure to take your camera, because you will want to take a snapshot of the UNESCO canals, and make room for a coffee and cake in one of the many cafes dotted across the city. You can visit Vincent’s largest collection at The Van Gogh Museum, and you can even watch free international and Dutch movies at the EYE Film Institute. There really is something for everyone in this exquisite city – look at the many more things you can do with the Amsterdam city guide.

Las Vegas, USA

No destination quite compares to Sin City. With exquisite casinos, stylish hotels and exceptional stores, you will most likely never want to leave the wonder that is Las Vegas. In addition to the glitz and glamour of the casinos, you can enjoy outdoor movies at Container Park, sunbathe by the hotel pool, or can view 250 genuine artefacts salvaged from the wreck of RMS Titanic.

Barcelona, Spain

You would have to be crazy not to consider Barcelona for your next city break, which is just as beautiful as the likes of London and Paris, but a whole lot cheaper. With so many free attractions, affordable tapas restaurants, inexpensive wines and amazing landmarks, you might even think of upping sticks and moving to the city forever.

You will be lost in thought as you walk along the cobbled streets of the Gothic Quarter, thinking about the many different people that once walked the same route. Tourists will not want to miss the unusually-beautiful La Sagrada Familia, as this mesmerising church has been under construction for 100 years.

San Juan, Argentina

While most travellers will be tempted to visit the Mendoza in Argentina, you would be wise to add San Juan to your list. The little town offers beautiful wineries, which is complemented by a laid-back, low-key lifestyle for a truly relaxing break to Argentina. One of the best times to visit San Juan is during the low season, which is between April to December.

Notable attractions include Las Marianas winery, which was built in 1922 and offers examples of original wine-making equipment. You should also head up to the Lookout Tower for unencumbered views of the town and nearby countryside.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is one of Europe’s most beautiful and affordable cities. Journey through the Old Town Square to come across surprising gardens, ancient chapels, traditional bars and chic cafes. The Czech Republic is also known for producing the world’s finest beers, so you should treat yourself to a glass or more during your trip to the city. There are also unusual sights at every turn, such as a 1950s nuclear bunker beneath a hotel or a cubist lamppost that adds a touch of uniqueness to this exceptional city. Just some of the best landmarks to visit include Prague Castle, the Prague Jewish Museum and St Vitus Cathedral.

Amsterdam Family Holiday Itinerary

Telling your friends you’re taking your kids to Amsterdam doesn’t always garner the most enthusiastic responses. The scores of coffee shops and the red light district don’t necessarily give out a very child-friendly impression to parents. However, it’s a common misconception that Amsterdam is for adults only.

The truth is that there are plenty of family-friendly activities to do in Amsterdam – you just have to know where to look. After you’ve browsed through the Amsterdam hotels from Expedia, you should start thinking about what you’re going to treat your family to. For the sake of brevity, we’ve mentioned just a handful of the many things you can treat your family to in the city.

Vondelpark

Vondelpark seems to be Amsterdam’s reply to Central Park in New York. When the weather is good, it’s a great place to hang out with the little ones. It’s the largest park in the city, located just south of the Leidseplein. Over 110 acres, it’s absolutely huge, and you can spend the entire day exploring it on bike.

You’ll be genuinely surprised at how much stuff there is to do in the park. There’s an outdoor theatre that has live musical performances for free during the summer. Also, Amsterdam’s Film Museum is located at the centre of the park, which is an absolute must if you’re a film buff. It hosts over 35,000 films and all kinds of film memorabilia. If you’ve got time for a movie, check out their classic Dutch film screenings.

Pancake Boat Cruise

Yes, you read that right. This cruise takes you around Amsterdam while filling you up with all-you-can-eat pancakes. It’s very comfortable, and the pancakes are delicious. Keep filling your belly as you admire Amsterdam’s gorgeous skyline, as well as other great views of the city.

The Pancake Boat is docked in Amsterdam Noord, and the length of the trips is negotiable. You can choose to go for an hour or two and a half hours – depending on how hungry you are. If pancakes aren’t really your thing, there are other food-themed cruises, like the Mexican Wrap Dinner Cruise or the Brunch Cruise.

Nemo

Nemo is a science centre and museum that’s geared specifically towards kids and teenagers. The largest science centre in the Netherlands, it receives over 500,000 visitors a year, and is Amsterdam’s fourth most-visited museum. Its popularity is definitely warranted.

It packs in five floors of interactive exhibitions. Your kids won’t want to leave – it’ll be particularly difficult to tear them away from the giant domino contraptions and the DNA experiments. You’ll be glad you visited, and your kids are bound to thank you for it.
