Events to go to after 2012 Olympics in London

The dust has settled on the Olympic Park, the curtain has fallen on the Cultural Olympiad, and the Jubilee is just a distant memory… 2012 has been a very special year for London, but it’s not all over quite yet! So tap in a quick search for hotels Londonand make a last-minute bargain sprint for the finishing line.

Jazz musicians from the four corners of the world will congregate in November for the London Jazz Festival, featuring more than 300 events in venues ranging from major concert halls to intimate bars. Headliners include Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, John McLaughlin’s 4th Dimension, Jan Garbarek and the Kenny Wheeler Big Band. Complementing the live performances is an eclectic programme of films, talks and masterclasses.

Shoppers will be flocking to the West End on 24 November for the annual traffic-free extravaganza, when Oxford Street and Regent Street become pedestrian zones, and promotions, performances and festive giveaways take place throughout the day. Take a detour into Carnaby Street, which is basing its Christmas decorations theme on the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones.

There’s still time to catch the Shakespeare Staging the World exhibition at the British Museum (until 25 November). Here you can discover what London was like in Shakespeare’s time through the bard’s famous works, characters and plays, along with paintings, rare manuscripts and historical artefacts. The exhibition is a collaboration between the British Museum and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and forms part of the World Shakespeare Festival and London 2012 Festival.

Hyde Park’s famous Winter Wonderland opens for the festive season on 23 November. Alongside the huge ice rink, observation wheel and Christmas market, attractions include Zippo’s Circus, the traditional Bavarian village where you can enjoy mulled wine and spicy German sausages, and the Magical Ice Kingdom featuring more than 500 fabulous ice sculptures.

The Festival of Winter Walks organised by the Ramblers Association takes place across the capital from 22 December to 6 January. Explore locations as diverse as Epping Forest, the Regent’s Canal, the South Bank and the Olympic Park. The walks are open to all ages and are free of charge. Finally, why not relive the excitement of the Royal Jubilee by getting to know a little more about our current queen’s famous predecessor Victoria Revealed is a new permanent exhibition in Kensington Palace which explores the life and reign of one of its most famous residents with personal objects and artworks exhibited in the very rooms she once called home.

The Sports Enthusiast’s Guide To Manchester

Sports have played, and still play, an important role in the city of Manchester. Forming an integral part of the area’s history, Manchester is home to an unbelievable range of sporting events and activities, played at levels ranging from grass roots weekend leagues to the best professional teams in the world.

Fans of sports must also remember the sporting teams and individuals also playing and competing in the surrounding area, including Greater Manchester and Lancashire. Sport in Manchester has also been boosted by the development of the brilliant SportCity district, which is home to an amazing array of sporting facilities.

Two of the most famous football clubs in the UK currently reside in Manchester; making it one of the greatest footballing cities in history. Both Manchester United and Manchester City have seen great success in recent past and have a huge and loyal following. This is not just found in Manchester but is noted across the world.

The stadiums of the two respective teams are fantastically designed and hugely atmospheric. Both offer tours around their facilities – making them an ideal place to visit when travelling to Manchester. If this takes your fancy and you find yourself looking to book a hotel near Manchester City stadium, then the SportCity Travelodge hotel comes highly recommended.

Future sporting events

Due to Manchester’s successful bid to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the city saw much development and investment for brand new sporting facilities. As a result of this, facilities such as the City of Manchester Stadium, the Manchester Velodrome, the National Squash Centre and the Manchester Aquatics Centre underwent development. With the resounding success of the games, Manchester found itself able to support the aspirations of many young athletes and competitors as well as proving the inspiration for the London 2012 Olympic bid.

For those that enjoy sports, Manchester is in a great position to cater for a huge range of less popular activities. Motorcycle speedway racing has always been a popular spectator event in Manchester and has been hosted by four different venues since 1928.

It currently resides at the Belle Vue Speedway in Kirkmanshume Lane. The city also boasts two America Football sides, the Manchester Titans and the MMU Eagles; both of which compete at a high level in the British game.

Finally, Manchester also features a successful ice hockey team, known as the Manchester Phoenix, who play at a purpose built arena, the Altrincham Ice Dome, and receive much support from the local population.
