Hotels vs. Serviced Apartments in the Melbourne CBD

Whether it’s for a last minute holiday with your friends or an important business trip, surfing the web for accommodation in Melbourne is an important step. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay that’s both convenient and cosy, you’re probably already sifting through pages of serviced apartments and hotels. But which is the better option?

Various factors come into play when choosing accommodation, and with the variety of options available in the Melbourne CBD alone, it can understandably be a difficult choice. Depending on why you need the accommodation and how you intend on using it, there are different things you should be looking for.

Here are some of the perks that serviced apartments in the Melbourne CBD have over hotels to help you make a decision on which accommodation is the best option for you. When conducting your search, consider these factors and helpful tips.

Accommodation that Feels Like a Home and Hotel

The biggest perk of a serviced apartment is the fact that it manages to be spacious, homely and cosy while keeping the best parts of hotel life as well. From weekly services to large dining areas, serviced apartments are the smartest choice for anybody that wants a convenient and comfortable stay regardless of how long they intend of staying.

Hotels are usually the preferred choice for shorter stays, as they’re much smaller and have fewer facilities. However, this doesn’t mean they’re necessarily cheaper. Anybody that’s experienced the stress of booking their holiday late will know that a cheap hotel room usually means a bad one. Most of the time, hotel rooms also don’t have kitchen facilities. Meanwhile, serviced apartments are versatile in their location and the facilities that they provide.

Get the Most Out of Your Stay

You might gravitate towards hotels because they’re situated in Melbourne’s city centre. But don’t let this deter you from looking into serviced apartments, as there are many serviced apartments in Melbourne’s CBD that are also conveniently located.

The best part about a serviced apartment is the spaciousness. This means you can invite over some friends, make a platter, watch a film or play a board game – things you couldn’t do in a squished hotel room. And if you’re looking for accommodation for work reasons, a serviced apartment in Melbourne provides you with privacy, a quiet environment and a comfortable place to be productive.

Weigh Up Your Options

Serviced apartments, like some hotels, have the potential to be inexpensive. For a hotel room to be as convenient as most people would like it to be, the price can be as much as or even higher than that of a serviced apartment.

Overall, serviced apartments are the best way to get your money’s worth. When you book a serviced apartment, you’re also booking a range of useful facilities with it. Kitchen areas, dining space, spacious rooms, laundry facilities and weekly services all contribute to an easier and more convenient stay, whether it’s for work or a holiday.

What to do in Melbourne

The city of Melbourne is located on the east coast of Australia. This city is known for its many museums and its pier, filled with cafés, restaurants and shops. Visitors will be able to explore the city’s architecture. There are many ancient buildings, churches and parks where visitors will be able to enjoy a walk.

Explore the art galleries and museums

The Melbourne Museum has several galleries. Visitors will be able to visit galleries dedicated to the culture and history of the Victoria region. There are several other exhibitions, including a rainforest where visitors will be able to see insects. The museum has a skeleton of a blue whale.

The Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre is located on the grounds of the Melbourne Museum. This centre has many exhibits dedicated to the region’s Aboriginal culture. Another large museum, this one dedicated to immigration, is the Immigration Museum.

The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art is one of the city’s main art galleries. The gallery’s rust red building is one of the city’s symbols. Another art gallery is Chapter House Lane, which is located next to St Paul’s Cathedral.

Enjoy a walking tour around the city center

Those who take a trip to the city of Melbourne will be able to explore the city’s cultural scene. The city’s Federation Square is a popular meeting point located in the city center. The Melbourne Visitor Centre is located on the square, and this centre organizes walking tours around the city’s historical landmarks. There are many bars, cafés and restaurants nearby.

The City Square is a famous square located near Swanston Street. The square is known for the many events and festivals that are celebrated there. There are several small parks and cafés.

Enjoy the views

The Eureka tower is known for its viewing platform. The observation deck is located on the 88th flower of the 297 meter tower. The deck has floor-to-ceiling windows with views towards the Docklands and the Port Phillip Bay. The Edge is a glass cube suspended above ground that is located to one side of the deck.

Take a walk in the parks

The Fitzroy Garden’s Conservatory building is another one of the city’s landmarks. The conservatory, built in a Spanish Mission style, has five floral displays and visitors will be able to see many tropical plants.

For the Art Lovers: Melbourne Makes its White Night Debut

Established in St Petersburg, Russia, White Night is an arts festival that, as the name suggests, runs continuously through the night. There are a number of cities across the world that host their own variation of the festival based on the original concept.

Places such as Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Leeds, Rome, Tel Aviv and Paris all play host to their own White Night events. Big news has emerged this year, as Melbourne has entered into the world of the White Night festival by hosting their very own version of the Russian arts extravaganza.

What Is The Purpose Of White Night?

Designed to encourage Melbourne residents and Australians across the country to get involved in the arts (either as spectators or actual artists), the white night festival included sculptures, dancing, art, design and live bands. In total there were over 100,000 people who made it to the city for the all night long festival.

One of the drawbacks to such a large number of people turning out in force for the event, meant that at times you might have had difficulty seeing what was happening. Not only did this hamper many people’s actual enjoyment of the event, but they may not have got to see an artist or a band they specifically turned up for. Many people made the wise decision and did not rush out to take part in the festivities until much earlier on in the morning, when a lot of the large crowds had disappeared.

No Longer Silent In The Library

One place that attracted a lot of attention was the state library that was playing host to very soft acoustic singing and harp playing. Many people remarked that it was beautiful and strange being in such a noisy library, contrary to the normal rules applied to sound within such an establishment.  Other places dotted around the city had been turned into interactive, real life art pieces.

Some of these places had lights that danced against walls while performance artists acted out. Because Melbourne is already famous around the world for its street art, it felt as if the city had been elevated to a higher level than many of the other events, in terms of art appreciation at least. If your appetite has been whet by Australia and this once a year event, then one of the best ways to get to Melbourne is by booking online through cheapflights.co.uk. Not only do fly to all the best destinations down under, but they also offer the best prices too.

Vibrant Melbourne

Everywhere you looked, you saw art of some kind or another; whether it was a statue, a painting or acoustic bands playing their own melodies – it really made Melbourne feel like the most alive city in the world.  Judging by the success of its debut foray into the world of white night, there is a strong sense that this won’t be the last time the city opens its doors for a long and extensive festival.
